I was scrolling through Spotify (which I just recently made the switch over from Apple woohoo!) trying to find a playlist that would help me. I was dealing with one of my depression phases and I just need a voice in my head other than my own. There are so many self-help podcasts out there and I feel it is much similar to therapy, you have to trial and error to find someone that works.
A podcast episode instantly stood out to me. “The One Science-Backed Habit You Need In 2023”. I can’t help but be drawn to a good quick fix, or at least something that sounds pretty straight forward, where you don’t have to think too hard while listening.
Let’s just say the episode took me somewhere I did not expect to go.
Soothing and Swearing, Say Hi to Mel Robbins.
The moment I heard her voice, I knew I going to connect with her. From the very first sentence to the way she presented her AD Breaks, I could already tell she was a no-bullshit kind of human. If Mel Robbins was a hug, it would be the kind of hug that brings you so much warmth & release yet refuses to release until you have acknowledged the BS stories you tell yourself.
What Is The High Five Habit?
In summary, the High-Five Habit is simply giving yourself a high-five in the mirror every day.
Yup you read that right.
The High 5 Habit is a simple yet profound tool that changes your attitude, your mindset, and your behaviour. So be prepared to laugh and learn as you take steps to immediately boost your confidence, happiness, and results.
Essentially what this does is force you into the present moment. It forces you to acknowledge yourself. It forces you to SEE yourself. When I first tried it, I didn’t really understand. I gave myself a high five in the mirror and then got on with my day. What I did not realize was that I was not looking at myself in the eyes fully when doing it. Once I high-fived myself AND looked myself in the mirror, I understood.
The High-Five Habit is self-love. It is telling yourself you are doing a good job. It is allowing yourself to feel that you are doing a good job. This is where things can get emotional.
When listening to the podcast, Mel brought on her husband, who told listeners his experience with the High Five Habit. It is rare to hear a men’s perspective on their struggles with self-love. Get the tissues.
I will link the podcast episode right HERE. Let me know what you think!
The Only Con: Fingerprints.
So yes, when you high-five yourself in a mirror, there will be finger prints. It seems a bit silly to get a perfectly clean mirror dirty with your greasy fingertips. Mel recommends doing the High-Five Habit every morning after you brush your teeth. So I would say try it after brushing your teeth and washing your hands 🙂 . Or just get out the windex hehe.
